Vacancy specifications:

The ERC-funded project ModERN: Modelling Enlightenment. Reassembling Networks of Modernity through data-driven research, hosted by Sorbonne Université, and the Voltaire Foundation, University of Oxford, are inviting applications for a 3-year doctoral contract to explore the subject of ‘Voltaire and the Press’ over the long 18th century in France.

As a member of the ModERN project and CELLF research laboratory (Centre d’étude de la langue et des littératures françaises UMR 8599), the doctoral candidate will be primarily based in Paris. He/She will work under the supervision of the Principal Investigator of the project, Glenn Roe and his/her degree will be delivered by the École doctorale III (Littératures françaises et comparée) of Sorbonne Université. The thesis project will be co-directed by Nicholas Cronk at the Voltaire Foundation, and regular trips to Oxford will be required.

In keeping with the scientific objectives of the ModERN project, which aims to establish a new data-driven literary and intellectual history of the French Enlightenment and its aftermath, the doctoral candidate will engage with new data-intensive methods and large-scale digital collections in order to investigate and explore Voltaire’s complex relationship to the French press: how did Voltaire use the press as part of his authorial strategy over the course of his long career? How, in turn, did the press use Voltaire to forward their own interests? And finally, how can we measure the reception of Voltaire in the 19th century through the prism of his use and re-use in 19th-century newspapers and journals? To answer these, and other, questions, the candidate will make use of textual corpora provided to the project by the BnF DataLab at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF) in Paris, and in particular their digitised collections of 18th- and 19th-century press.

Both in Paris and in Oxford, the doctoral student will join an interdisciplinary team of international researchers, editors and research engineers with whom he/she will liaise regularly. He/She will be expected to complete his/her doctoral thesis (in French) within three years, to communicate his/her results widely to academic and non-academic audiences, and to take part in the events convened by the project team, including seminars, workshops, and colloquia.

The candidate chosen for this position should hold a Master’s degree in French literature and/or intellectual history, preferably with a specialist knowledge of Enlightenment studies.

Cover letter in English or French addressed to the project’s principal investigator (Glenn Roe) and the director of the Voltaire Foundation (Nicholas Cronk) explaining the candidate’s interest in the project and presenting what skills he/she will contribute to ensure its successful completion.
CV containing detailed information about the candidate’s academic career.
A copy of the document confirming the candidate’s Master’s degree (or evidence of its imminent completion: date of viva, composition of committee etc.).
A sample of written work, on a relevant topic, of maximum 8,000 words (this may be, for example, a part of their Masters’ dissertation or an article).
The names and email addresses of two referees.

Selection criteria:

A Master’s degree or equivalent in French literature or literary/intellectual history to be completed before September 2022.
A specialist knowledge of the literary and/or intellectual history of the French Enlightenment.
Excellent communication skills.
Excellent written and spoken French and a working knowledge of English.
High level of organisational skills and of time management.

Le projet ERC ModERN. Modelling Enlightenment. Reassembling Networks of Modernity through data-driven research, hébergé par Sorbonne Université (Paris), propose un contrat doctoral d’une durée de 3 ans afin d’explorer le sujet de « Voltaire et la presse » au cours du long XVIII^e siècle en France.

Membre du projet ModERN et du laboratoire de recherche CELLF (Centre d’étude de la langue et des littératures françaises UMR 8599), le/la doctorant(e) sera principalement basé(e) à Paris. Il/Elle travaillera sous la direction de Glenn Roe, responsable du projet. Le diplôme de thèse sera délivré par l’École doctorale III (Littératures françaises et comparée) de Sorbonne Université. Le projet de thèse sera codirigé par Nicholas Cronk à la Voltaire Foundation, et des déplacements réguliers à Oxford seront requis.

En écho aux objectifs scientifiques du projet ModERN, qui vise à établir une nouvelle histoire littéraire et intellectuelle des Lumières françaises articulée sur l’exploitation massive des données textuelles, le candidat au doctorat utilisera de nouvelles méthodes informatiques et des collections numériques à grande échelle afin d’étudier et d’explorer la relation complexe de Voltaire avec la presse française : comment Voltaire a-t-il utilisé la presse dans le cadre de sa stratégie d’auteur au cours de sa longue carrière ? Comment, à son tour, la presse a-t-elle utilisé Voltaire pour promouvoir ses propres intérêts ? Et comment mesurer la réception de Voltaire au XIX^e siècle à travers le prisme de son utilisation et de sa réutilisation dans les journaux et revues du XIX^e siècle ? Pour répondre à ces questions, et bien à d’autres, le candidat utilisera les corpus textuels fournis au projet par le DataLab de la Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF) à Paris, et en particulier leurs collections numérisées de presse des XVIII^e et XIX^e siècles.

À Paris comme à Oxford, le/la doctorant(e) intègrera une équipe interdisciplinaire et internationale de chercheurs, d’éditeurs et d’ingénieurs avec laquelle il/elle sera en contact régulier. Il/Elle devra finir sa thèse (en français) en trois ans, communiquer largement ses résultats à des publics universitaires et non universitaires et participer aux événements organisés par l’équipe : séminaires, ateliers, journées d’études, colloques.

Le/La candidat(e) choisi(e) pour le poste devra être titulaire d’un Master 2 en littérature française et/ou en histoire des idées, avec, de préférence, une spécialisation en lien avec les études dix-huitiémistes.
