Complete Works of Voltaire – Œuvres complètes de Voltaire

The Voltaire Foundation at the University of Oxford is a world leader for eighteenth-century scholarship. Our core mission is to research and publish the definitive edition in French of the Complete Works of Voltaire (Œuvres complètes de Voltaire). This is the most ambitious project in French literature currently being undertaken outside France.

Writers, historians and other researchers need to be able to read Voltaire in a definitive version which has, astonishingly, never been produced; completion of the new Oxford edition will transform the study of Voltaire and our understanding of the Enlightenment.

The Voltaire Foundation and all the scholars who have participated in the publication of these volumes can be assured of the grateful admiration of the young scholars of the Enlightenment for generations to come. (Michul Kim, 2016)

By arranging and analysing Voltaire’s writings chronologically, we are untangling the evolution of his thought, radically changing our image of Voltaire.

The project has already attracted funding from many prestigious sponsors, including LVMH, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the British Academy.

This editorial project is one of the most prestigious in the field of French studies and is renowned throughout the world. It is invaluable to researchers in different fields - French literature and history, but also cultural studies, history of the book, legal history etc. (Catriona Seth, 2015)

We are on course to meet our ambitious target of completing the edition in 2019. To do this, we need to publish six volumes per year in each of the three years from 2017 to 2019, and we are now seeking sponsors for the last volumes.
