The Arab Enlightenment Project

The Arab Enlightenment Project is devoted to exploring the relationship between the European Enlightenment and the Arabic and Islamic worlds. Our research seeks to uncover little-known Arabic sources that helped inspire the European ‘Age of Reason’.  It also recovers the intellectual achievements of the Arab and Muslim civilisations, which reached remarkable heights in science and humanities in Baghdad and during the Golden Age of Islam in Al-Andalus. This will shed new light on the contributions of major thinkers such as Ibn Khaldun, Ibn Rushd (Averroes), and later reformers including Abd al-Rahman al-Kawakibi, Rifa’a al-Tahtawi, Rashid Rida, and Muhammad Abdu, among other contributors to modern reformist thought. The project is designed to develop new research on the cultural, political and religious factors that shaped the complex legacies of Enlightenment thought in a global framework.

يكرس مشروع التنوير العربي جهوده لاستكشاف العلاقة بين التنوير الأوروبي والعالم العربي والإسلامي. كما يسعى مشروع التنوير العربي إلى الكشف عن مصادر عربية غير معروفة على نطاق واسع ساهمت في إلهام “عصر العقل” الأوروبي. كما يعمل المشروع على استعادة الإنجازات الفكرية للحضارات العربية والإسلامية، التي بلغت آفاقاً متميزة في مجالي العلوم والإنسانيات في بغداد وخلال العصر الذهبي للإسلام في الأندلس. وسيسلط ذلك ضوءاً جديداً على إسهامات مفكرين بارزين مثل ابن خلدون، وابن رشد، بالإضافة إلى اصلاحيين لاحقين من بينهم عبد الرحمن الكواكبي، ورفاعة الطهطاوي، ورشيد رضا، ومحمد عبده، إلى جانب آخرين ساهموا في الفكر الإصلاحي الحديث. ويسعى مشروع التنوير العربي الى تطوير أبحاث جديدة حول العوامل الثقافية والسياسية والدينية التي شكّلت الإرث المتشابك لفكر التنوير ضمن إطار عالمي.
