Dr Sofya Dmitrieva

I am a historian of art and visual culture, specialising in eighteenth-century France. My research interests span genre theory, perception studies, and the history of collections.

Before joining the Voltaire Foundation, I worked at the Deutsches Forum für Kunstgeschichte (DFK Paris), where I was responsible for devising and creating The Art Collection of the French Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture database. I hold a PhD in Art History from the University of St Andrews.

At the Voltaire Foundation, I am developing an open-access digital archive of visual representations of Voltaire. Building on an extensive, critically annotated collection generously donated to the Foundation by Prof. Samuel Taylor, the resulting database will feature high-quality reproductions of Voltaire’s portraits in a variety of media, accompanied by art historical commentary, and offer advanced tools for tracing the evolution of his image.

In addition to my work at the Voltaire Foundation, I am a Junior Research Fellow at St Edmund Hall.
