Glenn Roe (Sorbonne University & University of Oxford)
The Poetics of Text Reuse: Digital Intertextuality in the Eighteenth-century Archive

Enlightenment authors were remarkably robust in their use and re-use of other sources, both modern and ancient, and often in a largely unacknowledged though acceptable fashion, relying on the shared cultural references of the reader to identify these borrowings. Many of these references remain hidden to modern readers, however, for whom this information no longer forms a part of their general knowledge. In this talk, Glenn Roe will outline how new computational methods and existing digital collections can be mobilised to uncover and reconstruct these hidden 18th-century intertextual networks and their underlying poetics of text reuse.
